Summer field crops – 2023
Commercial maize
The revised area estimate for maize is 2 582 500 ha, which is 1,54% or 40 500 ha less than the 2 623 000 ha planted for the previous season, and 1,51% or 38 500 ha more than the preliminary area estimate of 2 544 000 ha released in January 2023.
The expected commercial maize crop is 15 615 000 tons, which is 0,94% or 145 050 tons more than the 15 470 000 tons of the previous season (2022). The yield for maize is 6,05 t/ha.
The area planted figures are mainly based on information obtained from the Producer Independent Crop Estimation System (PICES), conducted by the National Crop Statistics Consortium (NCSC) for Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Gauteng and North West provinces.
Please note that information from the objective yield survey by the NCSC for the Mpumalanga province will be available in April 2023; and for the Free State and North West provinces in May 2023. The current yield figures are mainly obtained from producers in the different provinces.
The area estimate for white maize is 1 520 500 ha, which represents a decrease of 3,46% or 54 500 ha compared to the 1 575 000 ha planted last season. The production forecast of white maize is 8 187 150 tons, which is 4,29% or 337 150 tons more than the 7 850 000 tons of last season. The yield for white maize is 5,38 t/ha.
In the case of yellow maize, the area estimate is 1 062 000 ha, which is 1,34% or 14 000 ha more than the 1 048 000 ha planted last season. The yellow maize production forecast is 7 427 900 tons, which is 2,52% or 192 100 tons less than the 7 620 000 tons of last season. The yield for yellow maize is 6,99 t/ha.
Other summer crops
Sunflower seed: The revised area estimate for sunflower seed is 555 700 ha, which is 17,15% or 115 000 ha less than the 670 700 ha planted the previous season. The production forecast for sunflower seed is 775 260 tons, which is 8,31% or 70 290 tons less than the 845 550 tons of the previous season. The expected yield is 1,40 t/ha.
Other crops
It is estimated that 1 148 300 ha have been planted to soybeans, which represents an increase of 24,10% or 223 000 ha compared to the 925 300 ha planted last season. The production forecast is 2 651 680 tons, which is 18,91% or 421 680 tons more than the 2 230 000 tons of the previous season. The expected yield is 2,31 t/ha.
For groundnuts, the area estimate is 32 300 ha, which is 25,58% or 11 100 ha less than the 43 400 ha planted for the previous season. The expected crop is 51 155 tons – which is 5,47% or 2 655 tons more than the 48 500 tons of last season. The expected yield is 1,00 t/ha.
The area estimate for sorghum decreased by 8,60% or 3 200 ha, from 37 200 ha to 34 000 ha against the previous season. The production forecast for sorghum is 112 330 tons, which is 8,91% or 9 190 tons more than the 103 140 tons of the previous season. The expected yield is 3,30 t/ha.
For dry beans, the area estimate is 36 400 ha, which is 15,15% or 6 500 ha less the 42 900 ha planted for the previous season. The production forecast is 49 755 tons, which is 5,39% or 2 835 tons less than the 52 590 tons of the previous season. The expected yield is 1,37 t/ha.

Somergewasse – 2023
Kommersiële mielies
Die hersiene skatting van die oppervlakte onder mielies beloop 2 582 500 ha, wat 1,54% of 40 500 ha minder is as die 2 623 000 ha wat verlede seisoen aangeplant is, en 1,51% of 38 500 ha meer as die voorlopige oppervlakteskatting van 2 544 000 ha soos vrygestel in Januarie 2023.

Die oppervlakte beplant syfers is hoofsaaklik verkry vanaf die Produsente Onafhanklike Oesskattingstelsel (PICES), soos deur die Nasionale Oesskattingskonsortium gerapporteer vir Vrystaat, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Gauteng en Noordwes provinsies.
Neem kennis dat inligting van die objektiewe opbrengs-opname van die Konsortium vir die Mpumalanga provinsie, in April 2023 gerapporteer word en vir die Vrystaat en Noordwes provinsies in Mei 2023. Die huidige opbrengs syfers is hoofsaaklik verkry vanaf produsente in die verskillende provinsies.
Die oppervlak onder witmielies is 1 520 500 ha, wat 'n afname van 3,46% of 54 500 ha verteenwoordig vergeleke met die 1 575 000 ha die vorige seisoen. Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 775 260 ton, wat 8,31% of 70 290 ton minder is as die 845 550 ton van die vorige seisoen. Die verwagte opbrengs is 1,40 t/ha.
Ander gewasse
Die geskatte oppervlakte beplant met sojabone is 1 148 300 ha, wat 'n toename van 24,10% of 223 000 ha verteenwoordig vergeleke met die 925 300 ha geplant die vorige seisoen. Die produksieskatting is 2 651 680 ton, wat 18,91% of 421 680ton meer is as die 2 230 000 ton van die vorige seisoen. Die verwagte opbrengs is 2,31 t/ha.
Vir grondbone is die oppervlakteskatting 32 300 ha, wat 25,58% of 11 100 ha minder is as die 43 400 ha geplant vir die vorige seisoen. Die verwagte grondbone-oes is 51 155 ton – 5,47% of 2 655 ton meer as die 48 500 ton van die vorige seisoen. Die verwagte opbrengs is 1,00 t/ha.

Winter cereal crops – 2022
Wheat
The expected production of wheat is 2,089 million tons, which is 4,04% or 87 950 tons less than the previous forecast of 2,176 million tons, whilst the expected yield is 3,68 t/ha.
The expected production in the Western Cape is 918 000 tons (44%), in the Free State 432 000 tons (21%) and in the Northern Cape 324 300 tons (16%).
The area estimate for wheat is 566 800 ha. An estimated 360 000 ha or 64% is planted in the Western Cape, 96 000 ha or 17% in the Free State and 47 000 ha or 8% in the Northern Cape.
Other crops
The production forecast for barley decreased by 8,58% or 28 975 tons from 337 650 tons to 308 675 tons. The area planted is estimated at 101 000 ha, while the expected yield is 3,06 t/ha.
The expected canola crop remained unchanged at 210 530 tons. The area estimate for canola is 123 510 ha, with an expected yield of 1,70 t/ha.
The expected crop for oats for the 2022 season is 29 900 tons and the area planted is 27 000 ha. The expected yield is 1,11 t/ha.
In the case of sweet lupines, the production forecast remained unchanged at 15 750 tons. The area estimate of sweet lupines is 21 000 ha, with an expected yield of 0,75 t/ha.

Wintergewasse – 2022
Koring

Die produksieskatting vir gars is verminder met 8,58% of 28 975 ton van 337 650 ton na 308 675 ton. Die oppervlakte beplant word beraam op 101 000 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 3,06 t/ha beloop.
Die verwagte canola-oes is onveranderd gelaat op 210 530 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir canola is 123 510 ha, met 'n verwagte opbrengs van 1,70 t/ha.
Die verwagte oes vir hawer vir die 2022-seisoen is 29 900 ton en die oppervlakteskatting is 27 000 ton. Die verwagte opbrengs is 1,11 t/ha.
In die geval van soetlupine is die produksieskatting onveranderd gelaat op 15 750 ton. Die oppervlakte beplant met soetlupine is 21 000 ha, met 'n verwagte opbrengs van 0,75 t/ha.

Inligting is beskikbaar aanlyn by die Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development of by SAGIS, vanaf 14:30 op die dag van die toepaslike vergadering van die Oesskattingskomitee.
CONFIDENTIALITY ISSUES that CEC members are committed to adhere to on the day of the meeting
- Personal items such as laptops, handbags, cell phones, etc. are not allowed in the venue during the meeting.
- No member is allowed to leave the meeting before 12:00 in order to prevent disclosure of the information.
- The embargo time for the release of crop estimates information is 14:30.
- No member is allowed to discuss crop estimates information with anyone other than a member of the Committee before the embargo time.
- Only the Chairperson, or a member appointed by the Chairperson, may release the figures to the media.
- Members must regard the detail of any information that was collected for and/or discussed during the meeting, as confidential.
- Individual information received for crop estimate purposes is treated strictly confidential, and is not divulged for any other purposes.
