Summer field crops – 2022
Commercial maize
The size of the expected commercial maize crop has been set at 15,260 million tons. The area estimate for maize is 2,623 million ha, while the expected yield is 5,82 t/ha.
The estimated maize crop is 6% smaller than the 2021 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North West provinces are expected to produce 82% of the 2022 crop.
The area estimate for white maize is 1,575 million ha and for yellow maize the area estimate is 1,048 million ha.
The production forecast for white maize has been set at 7,790 million tons, which is 2,00% or 152 700 tons more than the previous forecast of 7,637 million tons. The yield for white maize is 4,95 t/ha. In the case of yellow maize the production forecast is 7,470 million tons, which is 1,40% or 103 000 tons more than the previous forecast of 7,367 million tons. The yield for yellow maize is 7,13 t/ha.
Sunflower seed: The production forecast for sunflower seed is 845 550 tons, which is 3,48% or 30 500 tons lower than the previous forecast of 876 050 tons. The area estimate for sunflower seed is 670 700 ha, while the expected yield is 1,26 t/ha.
Other crops
The production forecast for soybeans has been set at 2,201 million tons, which is 1,33% or 28 900 tons more than the previous forecast of 2,172 million tons. The estimated area planted to soybeans is 925 300 ha and the expected yield is 2,38 t/ha.
The expected groundnut crop remained unchanged at 49 000 tons. For groundnuts, the area estimate is 43 400 ha, with an expected yield of 1,13 t/ha.
The production forecast for sorghum also remained unchanged at 123 700 tons. The area estimate for sorghum is 37 200 ha and the expected yield is 3,33 t/ha.
In the case of dry beans, the production forecast remained unchanged at 52 590 tons. The area estimate of dry beans is 42 900 ha, with an expected yield of 1,23 t/ha.
Please note that the ninth production forecast for summer field crops for 2022, as well as the 'intentions of farmers' to plant summer grain crops for 2023, will be released on 26 October 2022.

Kommersiële mielies

Die produksieskatting van witmielies is 7,790 miljoen ton, wat 2,00% of 152 700 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 7,637 miljoen ton. Die opbrengs van witmielies is 4,95 t/ha. Ander gewasse
Die produksieskatting van sojabone is op 2,201 miljoen ton gestel, wat 1,33% of 28 900 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 2,172 miljoen ton. Die geskatte oppervlakte beplant met sojabone is 925 300 ha en die verwagte opbrengs is 2,38 t/ha.
Die verwagte grondbone-oes is onveranderd gelaat op 49 000 ton. Vir grondbone is die oppervlakteskatting 43 400 ha, terwyl the verwagte opbrengs 1,13 t/ha is.
Die produksieskatting van sorghum is ook onveranderd gelaat op 123 700 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sorghum is 37 200 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 3,33 t/ha.
In die geval van droëbone is die produksieskatting onveranderd gelaat op 52 590 ton. Die oppervlakte beplant met droëbone is 42 900 ha en die verwagte opbrengs is 1,23 t/ha.
Neem asseblief kennis dat die negende produksieskatting vir somergewasse vir 2022, sowel as die 'voorneme van produsente om somergraangewasse te plant' vir 2023, op 26 Oktober 2022 vrygestel sal word.

The area planted to maize in the non-commercial agricultural sector is estimated at 378 800 ha, which represents an increase of 4,38%, compared to the 362 900 ha of the previous season. The expected maize crop for this sector is 667 000 tons, which is 4,80% more than the 636 440 tons of last season. It is important to note that about 47% of the maize produced in the non-commercial sector, is planted in the Eastern Cape, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 22%.
Die oppervlakte beplant met mielies in die nie-kommersiële landbou-sektor word geskat op 378 800 ha, wat 'n toename van 4,38% verteenwoordig in vergelyking met die 362 900 ha van die vorige seisoen. Winter cereal crops – 2022
Wheat
The expected production of wheat is 2,219 million tons, which is 1,83% or 39 840 tons more than the previous forecast of 2,179 million tons, whilst the expected yield is 3,91 t/ha.
The expected production in the Western Cape is 972 000 tons (44%), which is 36 000 tons less than the previous forecast of 1,008 million tons. In the Free State, the expected production is now 480 000 tons (22%) compared to the 490 000 tons of the previous month. In the Northern Cape, 352 500 tons (16%) is expected to be produced – 67 500 tons more than the 285 000 tons of the previous month.
The area estimate for wheat was revised to 566 800 ha, which is 6 700 ha more than the 560 100 ha of the previous forecast. An estimated 360 000 ha or 64% is planted in the Western Cape, 96 000 ha or 17% in the Free State and 47 000 ha or 8% in the Northern Cape.
Other crops
The production forecast for barley is 365 850 tons, which is 1,22% or 4 500 tons less than the previous month's forecast of 370 350 tons. The area planted is estimated at 101 000 ha, while the expected yield is 3,62 t/ha.
The expected canola crop is 198 230 tons, which is 0,18% or 350 tons more than the previous forecast of 197 880 tons. The revised area estimate for canola is 123 510 ha, with an expected yield of 1,60 t/ha.
The expected crop for oats for the 2022 season is 41 600 tons and the revised area planted is 27 000 ha. The expected yield is 1,54 t/ha.
In the case of sweet lupines, the production forecast is 16 800 tons. The area estimate of sweet lupines is 21 000 ha, with an expected yield of 0,80 t/ha.

Die verwagte oes vir hawer vir die 2022-seisoen is 41 600 ton en die hersiene oppervlakteskatting is 27 000 ton. Die verwagte opbrengs is 1,54 t/ha.
In die geval van soetlupine is die produksieskatting 16 800 ton. Die oppervlakte beplant met soetlupine is 21 000 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 0,80 t/ha.
