Summer field crops – 2026

Commercial maize

The size of the expected commercial maize crop as been set at 17,523 million tons, which is 0,70% or 121 000 tons more than the previous forecast of 17,402 million tons. This is the largest maize crop on record. The expected average yield is 6,43 t/ha.

The estimated maize crop is 4,77% or 797 840 tons more than the 2025 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North-West provinces are expected to produce 82% of the 2026 crop.

The production forecast of white maize is 9,609 million tons, which is 1,28% or 121 000 tons more than the 9,488 million tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for white maize is 1,675 million ha with an expected average yield of 5,74 t/ha.

The production forecast for yellow maize remained unchanged at 7,914 million tons. The area estimate is 1,050 million ha, with an expected average yield of 7,54 t/ha.

Other summer crops

Sunflower seed: The production forecast for sunflower seed re­mained unchanged at 874 805 tons. The area estimate for sunflower seed is 570 100 ha, while the expected yield is 1,53 t/ha.

Other crops

The production forecast for soybeans also remained unchanged at 3,010 million tons. This is the largest soybean crop on record. The estimated area planted to soybeans is 1,213 million ha, with an expected average yield of 2,48 t/ha.

The expected groundnut crop increased to 65 620 tons, re­presenting an increase of 4,90% or 3 068 tons from the previous forecast of 62 553 tons. For groundnuts, the area estimate is 44 650 ha, with an expected yield of 1,47 t/ha.

The production forecast for sorghum is 123 325 tons, which is 10,79% or 14 923 tons less than the previous forecast of 138 248 tons. The area estimate for sorghum was decreased by 5 000 ha to 40 000 ha and the expected yield is 3,08 t/ha.

In the case of dry beans, the production forecast increased slightly to 80 695 tons, representing an increase of 1,95% or 1 540 tons from the previous forecast of 79 155 tons. The estimated area planted is 38 520 ha, with an expected yield of 2,09 t/ha.


Please note that the ninth production forecast for summer field crops for 2026, as well as farmers' intentions to plant summer field crops for 2027, will be released on 27 October 2026.

Somergewasse – 2026

Kommersiële mielies

Die grootte van die verwagte kommersiële mielie-oes is op 17,523 miljoen ton gestel, wat 0,70% of 121 000 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 17,402 miljoen ton. Dit is die grootste mielie-oes op rekord. Die verwagte gemiddelde opbrengs is 6,43 t/ha.

Die geskatte mielie-oes is 4,77% of 797 840 ton meer as die 2025-oes. Die drie belangrikste mielieproduserende gebiede, naamlik die Vrystaat, Mpumalanga en Noordwes provinsies, gaan na ver­wagting 82% van die 2026-oes produseer.

Die produksieskatting van witmielies is 9,609 miljoen ton, wat 1,28% of 121 000 ton meer is as die 9,488 miljoen ton van die vorige skatting. Die oppervlakteskatting vir witmielies is 1,675 miljoen ha en die verwagte gemiddelde opbrengs is 5,74 t/ha.

Die produksieskatting vir geelmielies is onveranderd gelaat op 7,914 miljoen ton. Die oppervlakteskatting is 1,050 miljoen ha, met 'n verwagte gemiddelde opbrengs van 7,54 t/ha.

Ander somergewasse

Sonneblomsaad: Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad is on­veranderd gelaat op 874 805 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 570 100 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,53 t/ha is.

Ander gewasse

Die produksieskatting vir sojabone is ook onveranderd gelaat op 3,010 miljoen ton. Dit is die grootste sojaboonoes wat nog aan­geteken is. Die beraamde oppervlakte onder sojabone is 1 213 miljoen ha, met 'n verwagte gemiddelde opbrengs van 2,48 t/ha.

Die verwagte grondboon-oes is verhoog na 65 620 ton, wat 'n toename van 4,90% of 3 068 ton verteenwoordig teenoor die vorige skatting van 62 553 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir grond­bone is 44 650 ha, met ‘n verwagte opbrengs van 1,47 t/ha.

Die produksieskatting van sorghum is 123 325 ton, wat 10,79% of 14 923 ton minder is as die vorige skatting van 138 248 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sorghum is verminder met 5 000 ha na 40 000 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 3,08 t/ha.

Die produksieskatting vir droëbone het effens toegeneem na 80 695 ton, wat 1,95% of 1 540 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 79 155 ton. Die beraamde oppervlakte onder droëbone is 38 520 ha, met 'n verwagte gemiddelde opbrengs van 2,09 t/ha.

The area planted to maize in the non-commercial agricultural sector is estimated at 397 170 ha, which represents an increase of 10,94%, compared to the 358 000 ha of the previous season. The expected maize crop for this sector is 695 025 tons, which is 11,83% more than the 621 500 tons of last season. It is important to note that about 36,96% of the maize produced in the non-commercial sector, is planted in the Eastern Cape, followed by Limpopo with 31,00% and then KwaZulu-Natal with 21,90%.

Die voorlopige oppervlakte beplant met mielies in die nie-kommersiële landbou-sektor word geskat op 397 170 ha, wat 'n toename van 10,94% verteenwoordig in vergelyking met die 358 000 ha van die vorige seisoen. Winter cereal crops – 2026

Wheat

The expected production of wheat is 1,806 million tons, which is 2,45% or 43 200 tons more than the previous forecast of 1,762 million tons, whilst the expected yield is 3,70 t/ha.

The expected production in the Western Cape is 874 500 tons (48%), which is unchanged from the previous forecast. In the Northern Cape, 288 000 tons (16%) is expected to be produced – also the same than the previous forecast. In the Free State, the expected production is 300 800 tons (17%), which is 43 200 tons more than the previous forecast of 257 600 tons.

The area estimate for wheat was revised upwards to 487 550 ha, which is 8 000 ha more than the previous forecast of 479 500 ha. An estimated 330 000 ha or 68% is planted in the Western Cape, 64 000 ha or 13% in the Free State and 40 000 ha or 8% in the Northern Cape.

The area planted estimate for the Western Cape and Free State is based primarily on information obtained from the Producer Independent Crop Estimation System (PICES), conducted by the National Crop Statistics Consortium (NCSC).

Other crops

The production forecast for barley is 414 640 tons, which is unchanged from the previous forecast. The area planted is estimated at 105 320 ha, while the expected yield is 3,94 t/ha.

The expected canola is 377 770 tons, also unchanged from the previous forecast. This is the largest canola crop on record. The revised area estimate for canola is 197 890 ha, with an expected yield of 1,91 t/ha.

The expected crop for oats for the 2026 season is 55 850 tons and the area planted is 40 800 ha. The expected yield is 1,37 t/ha.

In the case of sweet lupins, the production forecast is 18 000 tons. The area estimate of sweet lupines is 20 000 ha, with an expected yield of 0,90 t/ha.

Wintergewasse – 2026

Koring

Die verwagte produksie vir koring is 1,806 miljoen ton, wat 2 ,45% of 43 200 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 1,762 miljoen ton, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 3,70 t/ha is.

Die verwagte produksie in die Wes-Kaap is 874 500 ton (48%), onveranderd van die vorige skatting. In die Noord-Kaap is die be­raamde produksie 288 000 ton (16%) – ook dieselfde as die vorige skatting. In die Vrystaat is die verwagte produksie 300 800 ton (17%), wat 43 200 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 257 600 ton.

Die oppervlakteskatting vir koring is opwaarts hersien na 487 550 ha, wat 8 000 ha meer is as die 479 500 ha van die vorige skat­ting. 'n Geskatte 330 000 ha of 68% is in die Wes-Kaap aan­geplant, 64 000 ha of 13% in die Vrystaat en 40 000 ha of 8% in die Noord-Kaap.

Die skatting van die oppervlakte beplant in die Wes-Kaap en Vrystaat is hoofsaaklik gebaseer op inligting wat verkry is vanaf die Produsente Onafhanklike Oesskattingstelsel (“PICES”), soos deur die Nasionale Oesskattingskonsortium uitgevoer.

Ander gewasse

Die produksieskatting vir gars is 414 640 ton, onveranderd van die vorige skatting. Die oppervlakte beplant word beraam op 105 320 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 3,94 t/ha beloop.

Die verwagte canola-oes is 377 770 ton, ook onveranderd van die vorige skatting. Dit is die grootste canola-oes op rekord. Die hersiene oppervlakteskatting vir canola is 197 890 ha, met 'n verwagte opbrengs van 1,91 t/ha.

Die verwagte oes vir hawer vir die 2026-seisoen is 55 850 ton en die oppervlakteskatting is 40 800 ha. Die verwagte opbrengs is 1,37 t/ha.

In die geval van soetlupine is die produksieskatting 18 000 ton. Die oppervlakte beplant met soetlupine is 20 000 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 0,90 t/ha.
