Summer field crops – 2026

Commercial maize

The revised area estimate for maize is 2 716 200 ha, which is 4,60% or 119 500 ha more than the 2 596 700 ha planted for the previous season, and 1,57% or 42 000 ha more than the preliminary area estimate of 2 674 200 ha released in January 2026.

The expected commercial maize crop is 16 126 350 tons, which is 3,15% or 523 650 tons less than the 16 650 000 tons of the previous season (2025). The yield for maize is 5,94 t/ha.

The area planted figures are mainly based on information obtained from the Producer Independent Crop Estimation System (PICES), conducted by the National Crop Statistics Consortium (NCSC) for Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Gauteng and North-West provinces.

Please note that information from the objective yield survey by the NCSC for the Mpumalanga province will be available in April 2026; and for the Free State and North-West provinces in May 2026. The current yield figures are mainly obtained from producers in the different provinces.

The area estimate for white maize is 1 644 700 ha, which represents an increase of 2,81% or 45 000 ha compared to the 1 599 700 ha planted last season. The production forecast of white maize is 8 509 550 tons, which is 0,70% or 59 550 tons more than the 8 450 000 tons of last season. The yield for white maize is 5,17 t/ha.

In the case of yellow maize, the area estimate is 1 071 500 ha, which is 7,47% or 74 500 ha more than the 997 000 ha planted last season. The yellow maize production forecast is 7 616 800 tons, which is 7,11% or 583 200 tons less than the 8 200 000 tons of last season. The yield for yellow maize is 7,11 t/ha.

Other summer crops

Sunflower seed: The revised area estimate for sunflower seed is 569 600 ha, which is 2,50% or 13 900 ha more than the 555 700 ha planted the previous season. The production forecast for sun­flower seed is 754 475 tons, which is 7,78% or 54 475 tons more than the 700 000 tons of the previous season. The expected yield is 1,32 t/ha.

Other crops

It is estimated that 1 212 500 ha have been planted to soybeans, which represents an increase of 5,34% or 61 500 ha compared to the 1 151 000 ha planted last season. The production forecast is 2 661 425 tons, which is 4,95% or 138 575 tons less than the 2 800 000 tons of the previous season. The expected yield is 2,19 t/ha.

For groundnuts, the area estimate is 44 450 ha, which is 7,64% or 3 675 ha less than the 48 125 ha planted for the previous season. The expected crop is 65 238 tons – which is 2,98% or 1 888 tons more than the 63 350 tons of last season. The expected yield is 1,47 t/ha.

The area estimate for sorghum increased slightly by 0,85% or 350 ha, from 41 150 ha to 41 500 ha against the previous season. The production forecast for sorghum is 131 888 tons, which is 12,08% or 18 113 tons less than the 150 000 tons of the previous season. The expected yield is 3,18 t/ha.

For dry beans, the area estimate is 40 400 ha, which is 11,44% or 5 220 ha less than the 45 620 ha planted for the previous season. The production forecast is 78 594 tons, which is 13,21% or 11 962 tons less than the 90 556 tons of the previous season. The expected yield is 1,95 t/ha.

Somergewasse – 2026

Kommersiële mielies

Die hersiene skatting van die oppervlakte onder mielies beloop 2 716 200 ha, wat 4,60% of 119 500 ha meer is as die 2 596 700 ha wat verlede seisoen aangeplant is, en 1,57% of 42 000 ha meer as die voorlopige oppervlakteskatting van 2 674 200 ha soos vry­gestel in Januarie 2026.

Die verwagte kommersiële mielie-oes is 16 126 350 ton, wat 3,15% of 523 650 ton minder is as die 16 650 000 ton van die vorige seisoen (2025). Die opbrengs van mielies is 5,94 t/ha.

Die oppervlakte beplant syfers is hoofsaaklik verkry vanaf die Produsente Onafhanklike Oesskattingstelsel (PICES), soos deur die Nasionale Oesskattingskonsortium gerapporteer vir Vrystaat, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Gauteng en Noordwes provinsies.

Neem kennis dat inligting van die objektiewe opbrengs-opname van die Konsortium vir die Mpumalanga provinsie, in April 2026 gerapporteer word en vir die Vrystaat en Noordwes provinsies in Mei 2026. Die huidige opbrengs syfers is hoofsaaklik verkry vanaf produsente in die verskillende provinsies.

Die oppervlak onder witmielies is 1 644 700 ha, wat 'n toename van 2,81% of 45 000 ha verteenwoordig vergeleke met die 1 599 700 ha die vorige seisoen. Die produksieskatting van witmielies is 8 509 550 ton, wat 0,70% of 59 550 ton meer is as die 8 450 000 ton van die vorige seisoen. Die opbrengs van witmielies is 5,17 t/ha.

In die geval van geelmielies is die oppervlakteskatting 1 071 500 ha, wat 7,47% of 74 500 ha meer is as die 997 000 ha geplant die vorige seisoen. Die produksieskatting van geelmielies is 7 616 800 ton, wat 7,11% of 583 200 ton minder is as die 8 200 000 ton van die vorige seisoen. Die opbrengs van geelmielies is 7,11 t/ha.

Ander somergewasse

Sonneblomsaad: Die hersiene oppervlakteskatting vir sonneblom­saad is 569 600 ha, wat 2,50% of 13 900 ha meer is as die 555 700 ha aangeplant die vorige seisoen. Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 754 475 ton, wat 7,78% of 54 475 ton meer is as die 700 000 ton van die vorige seisoen. Die verwagte opbrengs is 1,32 t/ha.

Ander gewasse

Die geskatte oppervlakte beplant met sojabone is 1 212 500 ha, wat 'n toename van 5,34% of 61 500 ha verteenwoordig vergeleke met die 1 151 000 ha geplant die vorige seisoen. Die produksie­skatting is 2 661 425 ton, wat 4,95% of 138 5775 ton minder is as die 2 800 000 ton van die vorige seisoen. Die verwagte opbrengs is 2,19 t/ha.

Vir grondbone is die oppervlakteskatting 44 450 ha, wat 7,64% of 3 675 ha minder is as die 48 125 ha geplant vir die vorige seisoen. Die verwagte grondbone-oes is 65 238 ton – 2,98% of 1 888 ton meer as die 63 350 ton van die vorige seisoen. Die verwagte opbrengs is 1,47 t/ha.

Die oppervlakteskatting vir sorghum het effens toegeneem met 0,85% of 350 ha, van 41 150 ha tot 41 500 ha teenoor die vorige seisoen. Die produksieskatting van sorghum is 131 888 ton – 12,08% of 18 113 ton minder as die 150 000 ton van die vorige seisoen. Die verwagte opbrengs is 3,18 t/ha.

Vir droëbone is die geskatte oppervlakte beplant 40 400 ha, wat 11,44% of 5 220 ha minder is as die 45 620 ha geplant vir die vorige seisoen. Die produksieskatting is 78 594 ton, wat 13,21% of 11 962 ton minder is as die 90 556 ton van die vorige seisoen. Die verwagte opbrengs is 1,95 t/ha.

Winter cereal crops – 2025

Wheat

The final production estimate of wheat is 1,897 million tons, which is 1,81% or 34 900 tons less than the previous forecast of 1,932 million tons. The expected yield is 3,67 t/ha.

The production in the Western Cape is 980 100 tons (52%), which is unchanged from the previous month's forecast. In the Northern Cape, 300 000 tons (16%) are produced, which is 2,60% or 8 000 tons less than the previous month's forecast. In the Free State, the production is 265 050 tons (14%), which is 14 250 tons less than the previous month's expected crop of 279 300 tons.

The area estimate for wheat is 517 300 ha, of which an estimated 363 000 ha or 70% is planted in the Western Cape, 57 000 ha or 11% in the Free State and 40 000 ha or 8% in the Northern Cape.

Other crops

The production estimate for barley was decreased by 1,23% or 4 300 tons to 346 430 tons. The area planted is estimated at 96 950 ha, while the expected yield is 3,57 t/ha.

The canola crop is 309 035 tons, which is 0,90% or 2 815 tons less than the previous month's crop of 311 850 tons. This is the largest canola crop on record. The area estimate for canola is 174 515 ha, with an expected yield of 1,77 t/ha.

The crop for oats for the 2025 season remained unchanged at 45 143 tons. The area planted is 35 520 ha. The expected yield is 1,27 t/ha.

In the case of sweet lupines, the production estimate is 17 850 tons, which is 5,56% or 1 050 tons less than the previous month's expected crop of 18 900 tons. The area estimate of sweet lupines is 21 000 ha, with an expected yield of 0,85 t/ha.

Wintergewasse – 2025

Koring

Die finale produksieskatting van koring is 1,897 miljoen ton, wat 1,81% of 34 900 ton minder is as die vorige skatting van 1,932 miljoen ton. Die verwagte opbrengs is 3,67 t/ha.

Die produksie in die Wes-Kaap is 980 100 ton (52%), wat onveranderd is van die vorige maand se skatting. In die Noord-Kaap word verwag dat 300 000 ton (16%) geproduseer is, wat 2,60% of 8 000 ton minder is as die vorige maand se skatting. Die produksieskatting vir gars is verlaag met 1,23% of 4 300 ton na 346 430 ton. Die oppervlakte beplant word beraam op 96 950 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 3,57 t/ha beloop.

Die canola-oes is 309 035 ton, wat 0,90% of 2 815 ton minder as verlede maand se oes van 311 850 ton. Dit is die grootste canola-oes op rekord. Die oppervlakteskatting vir canola is 174 515 ha, met 'n verwagte opbrengs van 1,77 t/ha.

Die oes vir hawer vir die 2025-seisoen is onveranderd gelaat op 45 143 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting is 35 520 ha. Die verwagte opbrengs is 1,27 t/ha.

In die geval van soetlupine is die produksieskatting 17 850 ton, wat 5,56% of 1 050 ton minder is as die vorige maand se verwagte oes van 18 900 ton. Die oppervlakte beplant met soetlupine is 21 000 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 0,85 t/ha.
