Summer field crops – 2026
Commercial maize
The size of the expected commercial maize crop has been set at 16,508 million tons, which is 2,37% or 381 950 tons more than the previous forecast of 16,126 million tons. The area estimate for total maize is 2,716 million ha while the expected yield is 6,08 t/ha.
The estimated maize crop is 0,85% or 141 700 tons less than the 2025 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North West provinces are expected to produce 81% of the 2026 crop.
The production forecast of white maize is 8,758 million tons, which is 2,92% or 248 300 tons more than the 8,510 million tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for white maize was revised upwards by 20 000 ha to 1,665 million ha with an expected yield of 5,26 t/ha.
In the case of yellow maize, the production forecast is 7,750 million tons, which is 1,75% or 133 650 tons more than the 7,617 million tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for yellow maize was revised downwards by 20 000 ha to 1,052 million ha with an expected yield of 7,37 t/ha.
Please note that information from the objective yield survey by the NCSC for the Mpumalanga province will be available in April 2026; and for the Free State and North West provinces in May 2026. The current yield figures are mainly obtained from producers in the different provinces.
Other summer crops
Sunflower seed: The production forecast for sunflower seed is 778 155 tons, which is 3,14% or 23 680 tons more than the previous forecast of 754 475 tons. The area estimate for sunflower seed was revised upwards by 500 ha to 570 100 ha, while the expected yield is 1,36 t/ha.
Other crops
The production forecast for soybeans increased by 2,58% or 68 550 tons to 2,730 million tons. The estimated area planted to soybeans was increased by 200 ha to 1 212 700 ha, with an expected yield of 2,25 t/ha.
The expected groundnuts crop has been set at 69 360 tons, which is 6,32% or 4 123 tons more than the previous forecast of 65 238 tons. For groundnuts, the area estimate was revised upwards by 200 ha to 44 650 ha, with an expected yield of 1,55 t/ha.
The production forecast for sorghum is 140 653 tons, which is 6,65% or 8 765 tons more than the 131 888 tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for sorghum was adjusted upwards by 3 500 ha to 45 000 ha and the expected yield is 3,13 t/ha.
In the case of dry beans, the production forecast is 80 704 tons, which is 2,68% or 2 110 tons more than the previous forecast. The area estimate of dry beans was adjusted upwards by 550 ha to 40 950 ha, with an expected yield of 1,97 t/ha.
Please note that the third production forecast for summer field crops for 2026 will be released on 23 April 2026. The intentions to plant winter cereals for 2026 will also be released on 23 April 2026.

Somergewasse – 2026
Kommersiële mielies
Die grootte van die verwagte kommersiële mielie-oes is op 16,508 miljoen ton gestel, wat 2,37% of 381 950 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 16,126 miljoen ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir totale mielies is 2,716 miljoen ha terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 6,08 t/ha is.
Die geskatte mielie-oes is 0,85% of 141 700 ton minder as die 2025-oes. Die drie belangrikste mielieproduserende gebiede, naamlik die Vrystaat, Mpumalanga en Noordwes provinsies, gaan na verwagting 81% van die 2026-oes produseer.
Die produksieskatting van witmielies is 8,758 miljoen ton, wat 2,92% of 248 300 ton meer is as die 8,510 miljoen ton van die vorige skatting. Die oppervlakteskatting vir witmielies is opwaarts aangepas met 20 000 ha na 1,665 miljoen ha en die verwagte opbrengs is 5,26 t/ha.
In die geval van geelmielies is die produksieskatting 7,750 miljoen ton, wat 1,75% of 133 650 ton meer is as die 7,617 miljoen ton van die vorige skatting. Die oppervlakteskatting vir geelmielies is afwaarts aangepas met 20 000 ha na 1,052 miljoen ha en die verwagte opbrengs is 7,37 t/ha.
Neem kennis dat inligting van die objektiewe opbrengs-opname van die Konsortium vir die Mpumalanga provinsie, in April 2026 gerapporteer word en vir die Vrystaat en Noordwes provinsies in Mei 2026. Die huidige opbrengs syfers is hoofsaaklik verkry vanaf produsente in die verskillende provinsies.
Ander somergewasse
Sonneblomsaad: Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 778 155 ton, wat 3,14% of 23 680 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 754 475 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sonneblomsaad is met 500 ha opwaarts aangepas tot 570 100 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,36 t/ha is.
Ander gewasse
Die produksieskatting van sojabone is vermeerder met 2,58% of 68 550 ton na 2,730 miljoen ton. Die geskatte oppervlakte beplant van sojabone is met 200 ha opwaarts aangepas na 1 212 700 ha, met 'n verwagte opbrengs van 2,25 t/ha.
Die verwagte grondbone-oes is op 69 360 ton gestel, wat 6,32% of 4 123 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 65 238 ton. Vir grondbone is die oppervlakteskatting opwaarts aangepas met 200 ha na 44 650 ha, terwyl the verwagte opbrengs 1,55 t/ha is.

Neem asseblief kennis dat die derde produksieskatting vir somergewasse vir 2026, op 23 April 2026 vrygestel sal word. Die voornemens om wintergewasse te plant vir 2026 sal ook op 23 April 2026 vrygestel word.
