Summer crops / Somergewasse
Intentions to plant (2025) Voorneme om te plant
Producers intentions to plant summer crops are mainly based on the results of a non-probability survey conducted by the Directorate: Statistics and Economic Analysis of the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development and reflects the position as at the middle of October 2024.
According to the results of the survey, commercial producers intend to plant 2,640 million ha of maize for 2025, which is 0,1% or 3 850 ha more than the 2,636 million ha planted last season.
The figures show that producers intend to plant 1,578 million ha to white maize, which is 22 850 ha (1,5%) more than in the previous season. In the case of yellow maize, the expected plantings are 1,062 million ha, which is 19 000 ha (1,8%) less than in the previous season.
In the case of sunflower seed, the expected area planted is estimated at 540 000 ha, which is 2,1% or 11 000 ha more than the 529 000 ha planted last season.
The intended plantings of soybeans shows an increase of 0,2% or 2 700 ha compared to the previous season – from 1,150 million ha to 1,153 million ha.
The expected plantings of groundnuts will decrease by 2,9% or 1 200 ha, from 41 200 ha to 40 000 ha.
The intended plantings of sorghum is expected to increase by 28,3% or 11 900 ha to 54 000 ha, compared to the previous season.
The expected plantings of dry beans are estimated at 45 105 ha, which is 14,0% or 5 555 ha more than in the previous season.
Please note that the preliminary area planted estimate for summer grains for 2025 will be released on 28 January 2025.
Produsente se voorneme om somergewasse te plant is hoofsaaklik gebaseer op die resultate van 'n nie-ewekansige opname onderneem deur die Direktoraat: Statistiek en Ekonomiese Analise van die Departement van Landbou, Grondhervorming en Landelike Ontwikkeling en weerspieël die situasie teen die middel van Oktober 2024.
Volgens die resultate van die opname, is kommersiele produsente van voorneme om 2,640 miljoen ha mielies vir 2025 te plant, wat 0,1% of 3 850 ha meer is as die 2,636 miljoen ha aangeplant verlede seisoen.
Die syfers toon dat produsente van voorneme is om 1,578 miljoen ha witmielies aan te plant, wat 22 850 ha (1,5%) meer is as in die vorige seisoen. In die geval met geelmielies is die verwagte aanplantings 1,062 miljoen ha, wat 19 000 ha (1,8%) minder is as in die vorige seisoen.
In die geval van sonneblomsaad word die verwagte aanplantings beraam op 540 000 ha, wat 2,1% of 11 000 ha meer is as die 529 000 ha aangeplant verlede seisoen.
Die voorgenome sojaboon-aanplantings toon 'n toename van 0,2% of 2 700 ha, in vergelyking met die vorige seisoen - vanaf 1,150 miljoen ha tot 1,153 miljoen ha.
Die verwagte aanplantings van grondbone gaan afneem met 2,9% of 1 200 ha, van 41 200 ha tot 40 000 ha.
Die voorgenome aanplantings van sorghum sal na verwagting toeneem met 28,3% of 11 900 ha na 54 000 ha, in vergelyking met die vorige seisoen.
Die verwagte aanplantings van droëbone word beraam op 45 105 ha, wat 14,0% of 5 555 ha meer is as in die vorige seisoen.

Summer field crops – 2024
Commercial maize
The size of the expected commercial maize crop has been set at 12,724 million tons, which is 0,60% or 77 150 tons less than the previous forecast of 12,801 million tons. The expected yield for maize is 4,83 t/ha.
The estimated maize crop is 22,56% or 3,706 million tons smaller than the 2023 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North West provinces are expected to produce 79% of the 2024 crop.
The production forecast of white maize is 6,007 million tons, which is 1,27% or 77 150 tons less than the previous forecast of 6,084 million tons. The area estimate for white maize is 1,555 million ha and the expected yield is 3,86 t/ha.
In the case of yellow maize, the production forecast remained unchanged at 6,717 million tons. The area estimate for yellow maize is 1,082 million ha and the yield is 6,21 t/ha.
The main reason for the decrease in the production forecast for white maize is due to fewer producer deliveries (as reported by SAGIS), as opposed to what the Committee indicated during September 2024.
Other summer crops
Sunflower seed: The production forecast for sunflower seed remained unchanged at 635 750 tons. The area estimate for sunflower seed is 529 000 ha, while the expected yield is 1,20 t/ha.
Other crops
The production forecast for soybeans is 1,829 million tons, which is 1,01% or 18 350 tons more than the 1,811 million tons of the previous forecast. The estimated area planted to soybeans is 1,151 million ha, with an expected yield of 1,59 t/ha.
The expected groundnut crop remained unchanged at 51 745 tons. For groundnuts, the area estimate is 41 200 ha, with an expected yield of 1,26 t/ha.
The production forecast for sorghum also remained unchanged at 95 830 tons. The area estimate for sorghum is 42 100 ha and the expected yield is 2,28 t/ha.
In the case of dry beans, the production forecast remained unchanged at 50 495 ton. The area estimate of dry beans is 39 550 ha, with an expected yield of 1,28 t/ha.

Kommersiële mielies
Die grootte van die verwagte kommersiële mielie-oes is op 12,724 miljoen ton gestel, wat 0,60% of 77 150 ton minder is as die vorige skatting van 12,801 miljoen ton. Die verwagte opbrengs van mielies is 4,83 t/ha.
Die geskatte mielie-oes is 22,56% of 3,706 miljoen ton minder as die 2023-oes. Die drie belangrikste mielieproduserende gebiede, naamlik die Vrystaat, Mpumalanga en Noordwes provinsies, gaan na verwagting 79% van die 2024-oes produseer.

In die geval van geelmielies is die produksieskatting onveranderd gelaat op 6,717 miljoen ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir geelmielies is 1,082 miljoen ha en die opbrengs is 6,21 t/ha.
Die hoofrede vir die afname in die produksieskatting vir witmielies is as gevolg van minder produsentelewerings (soos gerapporteer deur SAGIS), teenoor wat die Komitee in September 2024 aangedui het.

Sonneblomsaad: Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad is onveranderd gelaat op 635 750 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 529 000 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,20 t/ha is.
Ander gewasse
Die produksieskatting van sojabone is 1,829 miljoen ton wat 1,01% of 18 350 ton meer is as die 1,811 miljoen ton van die vorige skatting. Die geskatte oppervlakte beplant van sojabone is 1,151 miljoen ha, met 'n verwagte opbrengs van 1,59 t/ha.
Die verwagte grondbone-oes is onveranderd gelaat op 51 745 ton. Vir grondbone is die oppervlakteskatting 41 200 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,26 t/ha is.
Die produksieskatting van sorghum is ook onveranderd gelaat op 95 830 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sorghum is 42 100 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 2,28 t/ha.
In die geval van droëbone is die produksieskatting onveranderd gelaat op 50 495 ton. Die oppervlakte beplant met droëbone is 39 550 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 1,28 t/ha.

The area planted to maize in the non-commercial agricultural sector is estimated at 347 000 ha, which represents a decrease of 3,24%, compared to the 358 620 ha of the previous season. The expected maize crop for this sector is 575 000 tons, which is 13,41% less than the 664 040 tons of last season. It is important to note that about 46% of the maize produced in the non-commercial sector, is planted in the Eastern Cape, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 22%.

Winter cereal crops – 2024
Wheat
The expected production of wheat is 1,965 million tons, which is 1,34% or 26 000 tons more than the previous forecast of 1,939 million tons, whilst the expected yield is 3,89 t/ha.
The expected production in the Western Cape is 1,122 million tons (57%), which is 18 400 tons more than the previous forecast of 1,104 million tons. In the Northern Cape, 285 000 tons (15%) is expected to be produced – 2,74% or 7 600 tons more than the previous forecast of 277 400 tons. In the Free State, the expected production is 227 850 tons (12%) – the same as the previous month's forecast.
The area estimate for wheat is 505 300 ha, of which an estimated 368 000 ha or 73% is planted in the Western Cape, 49 000 ha or 10% in the Free State and 38 000 ha or 8% in the Northern Cape.
Other crops
The production forecast for barley is 385 035 tons, which is 3,39% or 13 500 tons less than the previous month's crop of 398 535 tons. The area planted is estimated at 100 700 ha, while the expected yield is 3,82 t/ha.
The expected canola crop is 295 165 tons, which is 0,18% or 520 tons more than the previous forecast of 294 645 tons. The area estimate for canola is 165 750 ha, with an expected yield of 1,78 t/ha.
The expected crop for oats for the 2024 season is 62 300 tons and the area planted is 31 000 ha. The expected yield is 2,01 t/ha.
In the case of sweet lupines, the production forecast is 19 200 tons. The area estimate of sweet lupines is 16 000 ha, with an expected yield of 1,20 t/ha.
