Summer field crops – 2024
Commercial maize
The size of the expected commercial maize crop has been set at 13,256 million tons, which is 7,69% or 1,104 million tons less than the previous forecast of 14,359 million tons. The expected yield for maize is 5,03 t/ha.
The estimated maize crop is 19,32% or 3,174 million tons smaller than the 2023 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North West provinces are expected to produce 79% of the 2024 crop.
The production forecast of white maize is 6,277 million tons, which is 10,85% or 763 900 tons less than the 7,040 million tons of the previous forecast. The revised area estimate for white maize is 1,555 million ha and the expected yield is 4,04 t/ha.
In the case of yellow maize, the production forecast is 6,979 million tons, which is 4,64% or 339 650 tons less than the 7,318 million tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for yellow maize is 1,082 million ha and the yield is 6,45 t/ha.
Please note that information from the objective yield survey by the NCSC for the Mpumalanga province will be available in April 2024; and for the Free State and North West provinces in May 2024. The current yield figures are mainly obtained from producers in the different provinces.
Other summer crops
Sunflower seed: The production forecast for sunflower seed is 589 000 tons, which is 12,23% or 82 100 tons less than the previous forecast of 671 100 tons. The revised area estimate for sunflower seed is 529 000 ha (from 559 500 ha the previous month's estimate), while the expected yield is 1,11 t/ha.
Other crops
The production forecast for soybeans decreased by 15,22% or 325 690 tons to 1,814 million tons. The estimated area planted to soybeans was revised to 1,151 million ha (from 1,122 million ha the previous month's estimate), with an expected yield of 1,58 t/ha.
The expected groundnut crop has been set at 57 610 tons, which is 10,54% or 6 785 tons less than the previous forecast of 64 395 tons. For groundnuts, the area estimate is 41 200 ha, with an expected yield of 1,40 t/ha.
The production forecast for sorghum is 89 630 tons, which is 19,09% or 21 150 tons less than the 110 780 tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for sorghum is 42 100 ha and the expected yield is 2,13 t/ha.
In the case of dry beans, the production forecast is 54 120 tons. The area estimate of dry beans is 39 550 ha, with an expected yield of 1,37 t/ha.
Please note that the third production forecast for summer field crops for 2024 will be released on 25 April 2024. The intentions to plant winter cereals for 2024 will also be released on 25 April 2024.

Kommersiële mielies

Neem kennis dat inligting van die objektiewe opbrengs-opname van die Konsortium vir die Mpumalanga provinsie, in April 2024 gerapporteer word en vir die Vrystaat en Noordwes provinsies in Mei 2024. Die huidige opbrengs syfers is hoofsaaklik verkry vanaf produsente in die verskillende provinsies.
Ander somergewasse
Sonneblomsaad: Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 589 000 ton, wat 12,23% of 82 100 ton minder is as die vorige skatting van 671 100 ton. Die hersiene oppervlakteskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 529 000 ha (vanaf 559 500 ha die vorige maand se skatting), terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,11 t/ha is.
Ander gewasse
Die produksieskatting van sojabone is verminder met 15,22% of 325 690 ton na 1,814 miljoen ton. Die geskatte oppervlakte beplant van sojabone is hersien na 1,151 miljoen ha (vanaf 1,122 miljoen ha die vorige maand se skatting), met 'n verwagte opbrengs van 1,58 t/ha.
Die verwagte grondbone-oes is op 57 610 ton gestel, wat 10,54% of 6 785 ton minder is as die vorige skatting van 64 395 ton. Vir grondbone is die oppervlakteskatting 41 200 ha, terwyl the verwagte opbrengs 1,40 t/ha is.
Die produksieskatting van sorghum is 89 630 ton, wat 19,09% of 21 150 ton minder is as die 110 780 ton van die vorige skatting. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sorghum is 42 100 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 2,13 t/ha.
In die geval van droëbone is die produksieskatting 54 120 ton. Die oppervlakte beplant met droëbone is 39 550 ha, en die verwagte opbrengs is 1,37 t/ha.
Neem asseblief kennis dat die derde produksieskatting vir somergewasse vir 2024, op 25 April 2024 vrygestel sal word. Die voornemens om wintergewasse te plant vir 2024 sal ook op 25 April 2024 vrygestel word.

CONFIDENTIALITY ISSUES that CEC members are committed to adhere to on the day of the meeting
- Personal items such as laptops, handbags, cell phones, etc. are not allowed in the venue during the meeting.
- No member is allowed to leave the meeting before 12:00 in order to prevent disclosure of the information. The embargo time for the release of crop estimates information is 14:30.
- No member is allowed to discuss crop estimates information with anyone other than a member of the Committee before the embargo time. Only the Chairperson, or a member appointed by the Chairperson, may release the figures to the media.
- Members must regard the detail of any information that was collected for and/or discussed during the meeting, as confidential. Individual information received for crop estimate purposes is treated strictly confidential, and is not divulged for any other purposes.
